I remember well what my home looked like before we began our journey into minimalism. We weren’t hoarders by any means, but we had accumulated a TON of stuff.
Surfaces were cluttered. Papers were everywhere. And the closets… oh, the closets. Jam packed with items saved for someday or maybe or just in case.
After I hit my breaking point, we decided to pare down our belongings in a big way. Of course, eliminating unnecessary stuff from our lives was liberating. But I didn’t realize how it would open doors for us (no pun intended 🙂 ) to be more creative with our closet space.
Today I’m sharing a few ways to utilize closets as functional living space instead of storage:
1. Nursery Changing Station
This can be the perfect solution for a small bedroom. When we were expecting my youngest daughter, we removed the closet doors, painted the walls, and fit her changing table inside.
(You can go here to see how her closet looks now that she’s a toddler.)
2. Reading Nook/Prayer Closet
I was recently inspired to create a distraction-free zone for my morning quiet times. We have one walk-in closet in our house: the master closet. Since I have a pretty minimalist wardrobe (I own exactly two identical pairs of jeans that I alternate everyday), I was able to shift my clothes to my husband’s side of the closet. This freed up one side for my nook and I am loving it.
3. Sewing/Craft Room
If you’re crafty but don’t have the room for a dedicated space, try converting a spare closet instead. I keep my sewing desk tucked into the closet of my office. Those are my embroidery supplies hanging on the back of the door.
If you’ve spent any time on Pinterest, you know that there are TONS of inspiring closet transformations out there. I love this coat closet-turned-office!
5. Exercise Room
This one is completely genius. It wouldn’t work for everyone, but what an inventive way to use your folding home exercise equipment!
Our home is constantly evolving to meet the needs of the people living in it. Minimalism allows us additional flexibility now that our spaces are no longer crammed with stuff!
What would you do with an extra closet in your home? I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments!
